We plan but God prevails

AI, Christian devotional

A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. Proverbs 16:9

God's sovereignty and human responsibility are dynamic, yet mysterious processes that my finite minds cannot fully comprehend.  However, there is a danger that our view is out of balance, as if we emphasize one truth and neglect the other.  Some may mistakenly think that God's sovereignty makes men's efforts unnecessary or irrelevant. However, Men's responsibility will try to control our lives so that we plot every course and leave no room for God.

Too much of God's sovereignty asks: “If God is in control, why do we pray?” “God's will ultimately prevails, so my choices and actions don't matter."

Too much human responsibility excludes God from the big picture. “I will take care of things myself, my way." , “ I am the master of my own destiny."

Proverbs 16:9 offers a balanced view of both. It is not a call to become passive or overly self-reliant. This illustrates a dynamic partnership with God, where we plan our course, but God directs our steps. The journey of walking hand in hand with God requires us to step out and let God guide us along the way.

The balanced view says, “I plan and set goals, trusting that He will direct my step.” , “While I plan diligently, I seek God's wisdom and guidance.” . It is like a toddler building a tower of blocks with the loving parent nearby to guide. Even if the blocks tumble, the parents won't take over the tower, but instead will work together.

In a humble walk with God, we will find the balance, even though God's sovereignty and man's responsibility somehow intertwine. Despite men's many plans, the LORD's purpose will prevail. (Proverbs 19:21) As we plan, God's plan prevails, and His prevailing gives us assurance and comfort.

Setting goals and making plans is fine when we pray and align them with God's will. Rather than being afraid of the unknown, let's enjoy the mystery and rest in the sovereignty of God. Let's plan boldly, pray relentlessly, and proceed with humility as we enter the new season

Blessing prayer: We commit our plans to you. No purpose of yours can be thwarted. In Jesus’ name, Amen
