Invitation to Intimacy

Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. Luke 24:30-31

Jesus appeared in front of two travelers on the road to Emmaus. This story, recounting their encounter with Jesus, reveals some profound truths about our spiritual journey.

The two travelers, clouded by grief and confusion, did not recognize Jesus on the road, even though He explained the Scriptures from the beginning, emphasizing that all Scriptures pointed to Him. They still didn’t recognize Him until He sat down and broke bread. Why were they slow to understand? This teaches us a vital lesson: our understanding of the Bible is incomplete unless we invite Jesus.

The moment of recognition came when they invited Jesus to stay with them. It was their act of extending hospitality—an invitation to intimacy—that opened their eyes. Similarly, our spiritual enlightenment depends on our willingness to invite Jesus into the intimate spaces of our lives. When we ask Him to stay with us, to dine with us, He brings understanding and revelation, and thus opens our eyes.

Reflection:
How can you extend a deeper invitation to Jesus in your daily life to foster greater intimacy and spiritual insight?

Prayer and Declaration:

Lord Jesus, You are the Bread of Life, and in breaking bread, You open our eyes. Today, I invite You to sit with me, to dine with me. As You expounded the Scriptures to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, I ask You to open the Scriptures to me. Teach me, reveal Your heart, and help me to see You in every page of Your Word. Let this invitation deepen my understanding and strengthen my relationship with You, which is the only thing that matters. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
