Sealed by God

‘and will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,’ says the Lord of hosts.” Haggai 2:23

In the bible, signal rings are associated with authority, identity, and honor. In ancient times, kings and rulers used a signal ring, usually engraved with a seal, to authenticate documents and serve as signatures.

Often kings transfer authority and power by giving away their signet rings to certain individuals. For example, Joseph receiving a ring from Pharaoh, or King Ahasuerus giving his ring to Mordercai. Thus, it represents trust and authority; it signifies a person's chosen position to assume greater responsibility.

The biblical figures receiving rings have some common traits, such as competence or wisdom, but what matters most is that they are trusted by the kings, and the individuals are loyal to the kings. Even though Daniel was not specifically mentioned as receiving a ring, he was trusted by multiple kings because of his integrity, character, and God's favor. Similarly, God is looking for vessels to fulfill His purpose on earth through choosing them for significant roles.

Signal rings, on the other hand, represent identity and commitment. The prodigal son, for example, was given a ring to signify he belonged to a particular family and lineage. In spite of the son's previous waywardness, the father places the ring on the lost son as a symbol of love and restoration.

Signal rings are not just symbols of authority, but also of father's love for us. As believers, we are sealed with God's love. Is there a condition for receiving the ring? Believe in the gospel! As Ephesians 1:14 clearly states, when we believe in the gospel of salvation, the Holy Spirit seals us.

As with Zerubbabel in our key verse today, God uses the metaphor even though he doesn't receive a physical signet ring to describe His chosen status for a special purpose. We wear a spiritual signal ring, so let's manage our responsibilities God has given us. We need to be trusted by God and live out our identity as God's children. May our lives reflect the honor of being chosen and trusted by the King of Kings.

Blessing prayer: Thank you for choosing us to be your children. I pray that you will trust us with your authority and power so that we are stewards of them well for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen
