A Wise Fool, Part 11: Honor Authority
“A fool despises his father’s instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent.” – Proverbs 15:5 (ESV)Key Verse:
In Proverbs 15:5, the word "father" doesn’t just refer to a biological parent. It represents a figure of authority—someone entrusted with guidance, teaching, and discipline. This verse reminds us to recognize that honoring authority is essential for growth and character development.
The fool: in this verse doesn't just reject instruction; they also disrespect authority. Foolishness leads to an attitude that resents correction, seeing discipline as an attack rather than an opportunity for growth. Instruction, especially when it involves rebuke or discipline, is often uncomfortable. Yet it is closely tied to a father's role of shaping a child’s character—just as God disciplines those He loves. Sometimes life circumstances bring correction, and a fool may disdain it, even blaming God for what happens, refusing to see the potential for growth and the need for a heart change.
The wise: The wise person pays careful attention to correction. The word "heed" goes beyond simply hearing; it means to take it seriously and apply it. Even when reproof comes as criticism or chastisement, the wise understand it is for their betterment. They see it as a vital tool for character development and personal growth. As a result, they become prudent. Moreover, this process involves honoring authority with humility and submission, which allows the wise to continue growing in wisdom and maturity.
Practical Takeaway:
Reflect on any correction from authority figures in your life—whether it's from a church leader, boss, or mentor. Instead of focusing on their faults or reacting defensively, ask God to reveal their intentions. Often, their rebuke is meant to help you grow in wisdom and maturity.
Prayer:
Abba father, help me to honor the authority figures You have placed in my life. Give me a heart that embraces instruction with humility, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
