A Wise Fool: Part 6 – Walking in Wisdom

“Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.”

Trusting our own heart is common advice in the world, but our hearts can be deceitful, leading us astray with misguided emotions or desires. Proverbs 28:26 reminds us that when we choose to walk in wisdom, we are delivered from the negative consequences.

The Fool:
A fool is someone who places their trust in their own heart—relying on their inner reasoning without seeking God’s guidance. This trust, or confidence, in oneself is a form of self-reliance, where we depend on our own understanding for security and stability. According to this verse, this kind of thinking is foolish because it’s disconnected from the wisdom of God. The consequence? It often leads to negative outcomes—poor decisions, regret, and failure. Without God’s wisdom, we are left vulnerable to the deceitfulness of our own hearts.

The Wise:
In contrast, the wise person "walks in wisdom." This verb, "walk," refers to one’s way of life—how they conduct themselves daily. Wisdom, in this context, is not just knowledge but practical and moral skill in living. It’s rooted in the fear of the Lord—respecting, honoring, and submitting to God’s authority. When we live in alignment with God’s principles, walking in righteousness and godliness, the promise is clear: we will be delivered. This deliverance may come in various forms, whether from poor decisions or spiritual attack. Walking in wisdom shields us from harm and danger.

Practical Takeaway:
Cultivate the habit of asking God for wisdom when making decisions. When you’re unsure about a choice, take a moment to honestly assess your heart: Is this decision driven by faith, or is it rooted in fear or pride?

Prayer:
Abba Father, help me to trust in You with all my heart. Guide me in my decisions so that I may live a life aligned with Your will. Deliver me from the consequences of poor choices. In Jesus' name, Amen.
