Money is spiritual Part 5 Impatiently Chasing Wealth

"A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished." – Proverbs 28:20 (ESV)

The phrase “hastens to be rich” in Hebrew (אָץ לְהַעֲשִׁיר – atz le’ha’ashir) conveys the idea of impatiently chasing wealth. It describes someone focused on speed, unwilling to wait for God’s timing or guidance, and often willing to cut corners. This heart posture reveals a lack of trust in God, prioritizing material riches above integrity and spiritual values.

Such impatience often leads to unethical practices—lying, cheating, or exploiting others to gain wealth quickly. The Scripture warns that this path “will not go unpunished.” While the punishment may include earthly consequences like broken relationships, loss of reputation, or financial ruin, the deeper consequence is spiritual—a lack of peace and separation from God’s will. Ultimately, this behavior leads to judgment, as chasing wealth becomes an idol that replaces trust in God.

In contrast, the Hebrew word for “faithful man” (אֱמוּנִים – emunim) means steadfastness and trustworthiness. A faithful person is reliable, diligent, and trusts God’s provision and timing. They live by the principle of sowing and reaping, understanding that spiritual wealth is far more valuable than earthly riches. Their reward is abounding blessings—overflowing favor from God. Righteous living leads to a life filled with peace, joy, and God’s provision.

Golden Nugget

  1. Impatience Reflects a Lack of Trust: Rushing for wealth often reveals a heart that doubts God’s timing and provision.

  2. Consequences of Haste: Impatience can lead to earthly, spiritual, and eternal consequences.

  3. Faithfulness Brings Blessings: Trusting God, practicing integrity, and prioritizing spiritual wealth lead to overflowing blessings.

Prayer

Abba Father, Guard my heart against impatience and greed, and guide me to live rightousnesly, reflecting integrity in all I do. May I always prioritize spiritual riches over earthly wealth, trusting that You will bless me abundantly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
