The Mastery of Life Part 1
Why Do We Need Self-Control?
The Christian life is like a race, and Paul compares it to the disciplined life of an athlete in 1 Corinthians 9:24-25. But we need to start with the “why.” Why do we need self-control and a disciplined life like an athlete?
First, self-control and the Christian faith as a whole—is not about self-improvement. Our faith is not a self-help tool. When we accept Jesus as Lord (Romans 10:9), we surrender our lives to Him, living under His lordship. This surrender transfers us from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light (Colossians 1:13). We no longer live aimlessly or for ourselves; we now have a clear purpose: we live for God and to strive for an imperishable crown—the eternal reward of faithfulness.
The Christian race is not easy. The journey requires steadfastness and perseverance. It helps us grow in character and mature in faith, aligning with God’s loving plan to transform His children. Self-control is foundational to this transformation. It helps us resist distractions, overcome temptation, and avoid burnout. Through self-control, we remain focused on the race, running with purpose and doing so out of love for God.
Self-control is more than managing sinful impulses; it is a manifestation of love. It is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), produced through our loving relationship with God. It empowers us to stay faithful and run the race well—for the joy of pleasing God, who is a faithful rewarder of our faithfulness (Hebrews 11:6).
Mastery Tip: Attach Habits to Existing Routines
Pair a new habit with something you already do daily. For example, pray while brushing your teeth or read Scripture after your morning coffee. This “habit stacking” method makes new habits easier to remember and integrate into your day.
Prayer:
Abba Father, I surrender my life to Your lordship. Help me to exercise self-control, not for my own gain, but as an act of love and devotion to You.. May Your Spirit produce in me the fruit of self-control, so I can live faithfully and glorify your name, In Jesus’ name, Amen.
