The Mastery of Life – Part 4:
Living as Daytime People in God’s Kingdom
You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 1 Thessalonians 5:5-6
The key verse today reminds us that we are called to live as "daytime people," walking in the light of God’s kingdom and leaving behind the darkness of sin. When we come to Christ, we become citizens of the kingdom of light. It is as though we have immigrated to a new country, requiring us to learn the culture of this kingdom. This includes speaking a new language—one of grace and truth—and living in a way that reflects the values of heaven. Self-control is essential in this transformation, as it enables us to resist temptation and break free from sinful habits that keep us in darkness. When we walk in the light, we live transparently, with nothing to hide before God or others.
Self-control sustains the core virtues of the Christian life—faith, hope, and love. It nurtures faith because self-control is an act of steadfastness, helping us remain firm in our trust in God, even in moments of doubt or distraction. It protects hope by keeping us focused on God’s promises, enabling us to endure hardship and resist despair. Lastly, self-control flows from and sustains love because it allows us to put others’ needs before our own. Love often requires self-denial, and patience, and self-control empowers us to act lovingly even when it is difficult or inconvenient.
Through self-control, we live as children of light, reflecting God’s kingdom in a dark world. This is central to God’s purpose for His people—not only for our personal salvation but so that His kingdom virtues can shine through us, bringing His presence and hope to the world.
Tips: Guard What You Consume Online
What we browse online has a direct impact on our spirit. If we expose ourselves to ungodly content—whether it’s pornography, gossip, or anything that stirs up the lust of the eyes—we open the door for darkness and demonic influences. If you’re struggling in this area, don’t face it alone. Confess to a trusted, accountable partner and seek help through prayer or deliverance, if needed.
Prayer: Abba Father, thank You for calling us to be children of the light and for giving us the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us. Help us to walk in self-control, leaving behind the darkness of sin and reflecting Your grace and truth. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
