The Words of Proverbs (Part 19): Familial Respect

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Proverbs 31:28

Proverbs 31:28 beautifully captures the recognition and appreciation of a woman's virtues by those closest to her—her husband and children. The family acts as the primary witness to her character, a testament that is deeply felt and appreciated at home, not just observed by the public. This verse uses three significant verbs to describe the family’s response: arise, call blessed, and praise.

When the children "arise," it suggests they actively and deliberately show honor and reverence, recognizing their mother's virtues. Then, they verbally "call her blessed," an affirmation that acknowledges and celebrates her moral and spiritual qualities. Lastly, her husband "praises" her. This praise, derived from the root word for "Hallelujah," is not shallow but a heartfelt acknowledgment of her exceptional qualities. The virtuous woman thus receives respect and honor from her very family, affirming that her virtues and wisdom foster familial respect and honor.

Reflection Question:

How can we, in our own families, show similar respect and acknowledgment for the virtues observed in those we love?

Prayer:

Abba Father, we thank You for the wisdom and guidance found in Proverbs 31. Just as the children and husband honor the virtuous woman, help us to recognize and celebrate the virtues of those within our own families. Give us hearts that actively and verbally uplift and affirm one another. May our homes be places of mutual respect and deep appreciation, reflecting Your heart for a loving family. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
