Truth Over Desires

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, 'If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31-32

Jesus teaches us that true freedom comes from abiding in His word (John 8:31-32). This freedom stands in contrast to the bondage that results from following the lies of Satan, who 'has no truth in him' (John 8:44). When we listen to lies, which Satan speaks from his own 'resources' (John 8:44), that are led by our fleshly desires. Though following our fleshly desires may feel good, it ultimately traps us in darkness.

The truth, as presented by Jesus, may not always feel good. It confronts and convicts us, leading to genuine repentance and a deeper understanding of sin. As believers, we must be vigilant against deception and false teaching. Paul, in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, warns of a time when people will not endure sound doctrine, instead turning to teachers who affirm their own desires. The Bible describes this tendency as having 'itching ears'—those who seek messages that validate their desires rather than challenge them to follow the word of God. Herein lies our test of discernment, to distinguish between the 'spirit of truth' and the 'spirit of error' (1 John 4:6).

To discern between the 'spirit of truth' and the 'spirit of error,' the first condition is to know the word of God with a humble heart, allowing the Holy Spirit to bring the truth that sets us free from a world filled with misleading voices.

Reflection Question

Are you willing to choose the hard truths of God's word over the comforting illusions of the world?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the Truth that sets us free. Today, I choose to renounce the lies and deceptions that have clouded my vision. Help me to abide in Your word, discerning and rejecting falsehood. Teach me to embrace Your truth, even when it is hard to hear. Let Your light guide me out of darkness and into the life of freedom. In Jesus name, I reject the spirit of error and receive the spirit of truth, In Jesus’ name, Amen
