A “Kun” Heart
The preparations of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs the spirits. 3 Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established Proverbs 16:1-3
The Hebrew word "Kun" can be found over 200 times in the old testament. “Kun” means “to be firm, to be stable, to establish”. "Kun" signifies security, stability and a firm foundation.
In addition, "Kun" also means “to prepare”, “to be ready”, or “to be directed”. I believe there's a connection between "firm" and "preparation", a preparation that leads to a firm foundation.
There are two types of preparation. The first type is man's preparation that involves planning, as indicated in the key verse today. As Proverbs 19:21 “The human mind may devise many plans, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will be established.”
Although man's preparation is finite, "all his ways are pure in his own eyes," we tend to believe our thoughts are legitimate and make sense to us. In truth, man's planning cannot lead to firm establishment (Kun).
The second preparation comes from the Lord, or as most Christians call it, the "process". Committing our lives to the Lord does not guarantee an easy life. Throughout our lives, we will have hardships, persecution, and setbacks, but God has used all those processes to prepare (Kun) our hearts for His sure plan (Kun).
God directs (kun) our thoughts and plans that establish (Kun) His plans in our lives. Hence, a “Kun” heart means a prepared and firm heart. In particular, prayer cultivates a prepared heart; so that we can commit our works to Him, trusting that He has a great plan for us, and everything we do will be established by Him.
When our hearts are prepared for God's divine plans, "things are firmly established" in the midst of preparation.
Blessing prayer: May we discover your steadfast love in difficult situations so our heart is prepared for your unchanging plans. In Jesus' name, Amen
