Four dimensions of love
May be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:18-19
The love of God is limitless and immeasurable, making it impossible for any finite human to comprehend the incomprehensible nature of God and His love. What makes the creator of the universe love each of us so deeply? “What is man that you are mindful of him? Psalm 8:4, Love can't be explained by our heads because it is experiential at our heart.
God's love is evident in His provision, such as wonderful relationships, financial blessings, help and comfort during difficult times, or some mountain top experiences, which easily identify God's love. But there's much more God's love under the surface and evident experiences. God is doing so much in our lives that we can't imagine. As a pastor once said, God is constantly doing 10,0000 things in our lives, but we may only realize three of them.
This key verse explains how to comprehend “ the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,” as the preceding verses require that the spirit strengthens our inner man so that Christ lives in our heart through faith. When we are rooted in love, God's love can be comprehended in its four dimensions: width, length, depth, and height.
Thewidth or breadth symbolizes the inclusiveness of His love. Even though we were sinners, Christ died for us, so anyone can receive the free gift of salvation through faith, regardless of race, nation, or culture. Salvation and forgiveness is for all. “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us,” Psalm 103:2
The length represents Christ's transcendence of time and space, His love spanning eternity and eternity. There is no end to His love, it goes beyond time and is not limited to a moment in time. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, so His love and power can redeem us from the past and restore us to the future.
The depth of God's love means it can reach the deepest part of our souls. He is able to touch the innermost parts of our hearts, "Even if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there."(Psalm 139:8) No matter how deep we sink in suffering and brokenness, God has the power to reach and transform us.
Finally, the height represents Christ's love's vastness and supreme majesty. As God's throne is in heaven, and because of His love, He raised us together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. God is not a thousand miles away but He removed all division for us to be together with Him forever.
