Sowing in tears

Those who sow in tears, shall reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Psalm 126:5-6

In times of sorrow, Psalm 126 contains a powerful message of hope and God's promises that He turns our sorrow into joy and tears into laughter. It conveys a beautiful image that a crying farmer will eventually return with the harvest in his hands with joy. When we commit ourselves to God, even in times of sorrow, the good work will yield great harvests so we will all rejoice.

Sowing tears doesn't sound like a positive message and it reminds me of the shortest verse in the Bible:  “Jesus wept.” Not only did He weep for Lazarus' death, but for all of us. He is known as the suffering servant. In His life on earth, Jesus shed many tears because he knew the trouble and sorrow He faced in this life. He went to the cross weeping, carrying seeds of tears to sow. His tears were sown with the hope that He would reap great joy. His resurrection happened on the third day, and God exalted Him above all things, and every tribe and tongue shouted together for him, for we are all His harvest, carrying sheaves of believers with Jesus. As a result, Psalm 126 presents a prophetic picture of Jesus sowing tears and reaping the glorious harvests.

The tears we shed are precious to God, and He records them. Psalm 56:8 says: “Record my lament; list my tears on your scroll – are they not in your record?" Our tears for the Lord will not be wasted for He will turn something greater. It is also true that weeping is temporary, as "weeping endures at night but joy comes in the morning" and that joy will finally come in the morning and become part of His eternal glory.

There is a time for sowing and reaping. Perhaps you are in a time of sowing tears right now, but don't lose heart, for the time of reaping will come. The harvest awaits. We are promised by God that He will turn our tears into joy. There will come a day when we no longer cry and Jesus will wipe away every tear from our eyes.

Blessing prayer:. God, you can turn our tears into joy because you make rivers in the desert and great harvest in the midst of sorrow.  In Jesus' name, Amen
