A Wise Fool, Part 15: Conclusion: The Essence of Wisdom

"And he said to the human race, 'The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.'"
— Job 28:28

This is the conclusion of our "A Wise Fool" series. Over the past weeks, we’ve contrasted the actions of the wise and the fool. It’s fitting to end with one of the wisdom books of the Bible—Job. Chapter 28 beautifully sums up the nature of wisdom, reminding us that true wisdom only comes from God:

The Fool:

In Job 28, we see humanity’s incredible achievements—mining deep into the earth for gold, silver, and treasures. Yet, despite their efforts, true wisdom remains beyond human reach. The fool believes wisdom can be discovered or purchased by human effort, relying on intellect or accomplishments instead of God.

This misplaced confidence leads to a life built on sand—unstable and unable to withstand the storms of life. The fool’s rejection of God’s wisdom results in pride, spiritual deception, and ultimate fall.

The Wise:

The Bible consistently defines wisdom as "the fear of the Lord"—a reverent awe and submission to God. The key verse also teaches us that understanding is turning away from evil. To fear the Lord is to take God’s Word seriously, live by it, and flee from sin.

True wisdom is not found in human strength or knowledge but is revealed through a relationship with God. The wise build on the firm foundation of God’s Word, living in obedience and humility. Their lives reflect stability (Proverbs 24:3-4), blessing (Proverbs 3:13-14), and strength to endure life’s challenges (Ecclesiastes 7:19). Lastly,  God promises that wisdom leads to a fulfilling and fruitful life: "For by me your days will be multiplied, and years will be added to your life." (Proverbs 9:11)

Practical Takeaway:

When you lack wisdom, ask God. "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5) Trust Him to guide you, and commit to turning from sin and living out His Word each day.

Prayer:

Abba Father, You are the source of all wisdom. Help me to fear You, turn from evil, and live by Your Word. When I lack wisdom, remind me to ask You with faith. May my life reflect Your wisdom and bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
