Food for Holistic Wellness (Part 3): Dust and Gut

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Genesis 2:7 (ESV)

Physical Aspect: Creation and Gut health

In Genesis, God created us from the dust of the ground. Interestingly, our gut microbiome—the bacteria living inside our bodies—mirrors the soil ecosystem. Just as fertile soil supports plant life, our gut microbiome aids digestion and nutrient absorption. The gut is like fertile soil, requiring various micronutrients such as magnesium, zinc, calcium, and iron for optimal function.

Just as soil needs the right mix of nutrients and microorganisms to thrive, our gut flourishes when we consume the right foods, often called psychobiotic foods, which promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. These foods include fermented products like kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, and yogurt, as well as prebiotic foods like onions or foods rich in inulin. By nourishing our bodies with the right balance of foods, we support the health of our gut ecosystem—just as healthy soil nurtures plants.

Emotional Aspect: A Happy Gut, A Happy Mind

A healthy gut leads to a healthy mind. The gut-brain axis doesn’t just benefit our physical health—it also impacts our emotional well-being. Our gut produces about 90% of the body's serotonin, the "feel-good" hormone that regulates mood, sleep, and stress. When our gut is balanced with the right bacteria, it can help reduce anxiety and improve our emotional health. Truly, a happy gut creates a happy mind.

Spiritual Aspect: From Dust to Transformation

Being created from dust is a reminder of our humble beginnings and our dependence on God. Just as soil is lifeless on its own, we need the breath of God—His Spirit—to come alive. In the same way that bacteria in soil and the gut break down matter to create fertile ground for growth, God’s Spirit transforms us from lifeless dust into something fruitful. This process mirrors our spiritual transformation. When we remain humble and receive God's Word, we allow Him to turn our lives—like soil—into fertile ground where spiritual fruit can grow.

Tips: Eating for Gut Health

  • Fermented Kimchi & Sauerkraut: These are excellent sources of live bacteria that promote gut health. However, be cautious with commercial kimchi, as it is often highly processed and may lack live cultures. Look for unpasteurized versions that contain live probiotics. (Foodcraft.hk)

  • Kefir & Authentic Yogurt: These are rich in beneficial bacteria. Kefir is highly potent in probiotics. When choosing Greek yogurt, be mindful that many "Greek-style" yogurts add thickeners and cream, which may reduce the effectiveness of live cultures. (Marks and Spencers)

Chicory Root: Rich in inulin, a prebiotic that feeds good bacteria, chicory root can be grated and soaked in water as a drink. It has a slightly bitter taste like tea but provides excellent prebiotics for gut health. (iherb: Frontier Co-op, Roasted Chicory Root, Granules. Discount code:BEH2641)

Prayer: Abba Father, Thank You for creating us from the dust and breathing Your Spirit into us so that we may live. Help us to stay humble and dependent on You, just as the soil relies on Your design to bring forth life. Bless our bodies, especially our gut health, so we can align with Your intricate creation and live in balance with Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen.
