Food for Holistic Wellness Series (Part 9)

Spice Up Your Well-Being

"Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant cane." Exodus 30:23 (NIV)

Physical Aspect: Nourishing the Body

Cinnamon, cumin, cassia, and caraway are spices commonly used in Middle Eastern and Asian cuisines, and they’re packed with health benefits. Cinnamon, for example, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to help regulate blood sugar levels. Cumin is rich in antioxidants, while caraway and cassia are also beneficial for easing indigestion and promoting heart health. These spices are part of God’s creation, designed with natural properties to support our health. We can see God’s hand in providing spices, not only to flavor our food but also to nourish our bodies.

Emotional Aspect: Supporting Emotional Balance

Cinnamon supports emotional wellness in more subtle ways. For instance, by helping to stabilize blood sugar levels, cinnamon can prevent the mood swings that sometimes accompany blood sugar spikes and crashes. Additionally, the comforting aroma of cinnamon has been shown to improve alertness and cognitive function, which could enhance focus and well-being. These spices allows us to experience balance and comfort.

Spiritual Aspect: Symbolism and Significance

In Exodus 30, cinnamon was used in the holy anointing oil, symbolizing purity and devotion. This shows that spices like cinnamon were not only valuable for physical health but also played a role in spiritual rituals. The use of cinnamon in anointing oil reminds us that God cares for our holistic well-being—body, mind, and spirit. When we use these spices today, we can reflect on their biblical significance and the way God uses simple, everyday things for His purposes.

Tips:

  • Add a dash of cinnamon to your coffee or tea for a warming, health-boosting treat.

  • Cinnamon is often used in braised meat dishes—try incorporating it into your next slow-cooked meal.

Prayer:

Abba Father, thank You for using the simple and ordinary things in life for Your great purpose. Just as You anointed Your people with fragrant oil, may You anoint us with Your presence, setting us apart for Your glory. We trust in Your care for our holistic well-being—body, mind, and spirit. n Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
