Food for Holistic Wellness Series (Part 8)
Meaty Celebration
"And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate."Verse: Luke 15:23 (ESV)
In Scripture, meat is often part of joyful gatherings and divine provision. After the Flood, God permitted the consumption of meat (Genesis 9:3-4), and even Jesus ate meat, such as lamb and fish, showing that it can be enjoyed as part of God’s abundant provision.
Physical Aspect: Nourishment and Health
Beef, especially grass-fed, is rich in bioavailable nutrients such as protein, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12 that are easily absorbed by the body. These nutrients are crucial for muscle repair, immune function, and energy production. However, grain-fed cattle often suffer from digestive issues because cows are naturally designed to eat grass, not grains. This can lead to illness, requiring the use of antibiotics. On the other hand, grass-fed beef contains higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, making it a healthier choice..Natural red meat is not inherently harmful; just avoid processed red meats such as sausages, bacon, and ham, which contain added chemical preservatives.
Emotional Aspect: Mood and Nervous System Support
Beef and lamb are also high in vitamin B12, which is essential for maintaining a healthy nervous system. B12 plays a key role in producing neurotransmitters, like serotonin and dopamine, that regulate mood and emotional health. A deficiency in B12 can lead to fatigue, irritability, and even depression. By including meat in your diet, you help support emotional well-being and mental clarity, ensuring that your nervous system functions properly.
Spiritual Aspect: Celebration, Fellowship, and Worship
In the Bible, the consumption of meat, particularly lamb and beef, is associated with celebration, fellowship, and God’s presence. The Passover lamb was central to Israel’s annual celebration of deliverance, symbolizing God’s saving grace. Similarly, the fattened calf in the parable of the Prodigal Son highlights the joy of reconciliation in God’s family. The father’s feast with the fattened calf reflects the joy God has when we return to Him. However, it’s important to remember that meat consumption is not mandatory. In the New Testament, the Paul emphasizes that believers should not let food become a point of division or judgment. He teaches that while food, including meat, is permissible, it should not be a source of conflict or stumbling for others. The focus should be on unity and love within the body of Christ, not on dietary choices.
