Part 7: The Healing of the Fig

"Isaiah had said, 'Prepare a poultice of figs and apply it to the boil, and he will recover.'" Isaiah 38:21

Figs are frequently mentioned in the Bible as a symbol of healing and restoration. In Scripture, figs represent everything from prosperity to recovery. They are not only spiritually significant but are also rich in nutrients that promote physical health. Whether fresh or dried, figs have been valued for centuries for their ability to nourish both body and soul.

Physical Aspect: Nourishment for the Body

Figs are packed with fiber, which is excellent for digestive health. They are also high in potassium, which supports heart health and helps lower blood pressure. Figs contain calcium and magnesium, essential for bone health and muscle function, making them an ideal snack for active lifestyles. Dried figs are my go-to pre-workout snack or for long outings, as their natural sugars provide a great energy boost. In the Bible, figs were even used for medicinal purposes, such as when a fig poultice was applied to heal King Hezekiah’s illness (Isaiah 38:21).

Emotional Aspect: A Symbol of Peace

Figs have long been associated with peace. In the Bible, the phrase “every man under his vine and fig tree” (Micah 4:4) symbolizes a time of peace, security, and contentment. Emotionally, figs remind us to cultivate peace within ourselves, enjoying the equilibrium that comes from a life well-balanced. Just as figs ripen slowly, they teach us to be patient with our emotional growth, trusting that healing and restoration take time.

Spiritual Aspect: Healing and Restoration

Figs carry deep spiritual meaning in the Bible, often representing healing and restoration. In Jeremiah 24, God uses figs as a metaphor for the people of Israel, distinguishing between those who are "good" and those who have gone astray. The good figs represent those who remain faithful, and God promises to restore them to their land. Spiritually, figs remind us of God's promise to restore and heal our lives when we turn to Him.

Tips

  1. I usually buy the Sunny Fruit brand organic dried igs with convenient individual packs.

  2. Fresh figs pair beautifully with goat cheese and a drizzle of honey in a rocket salad—an easy and delicious dish!

Prayer: Abba Father, thank You for the gift of figs, which represent healing and restoration. Just as You healed King Hezekiah with a fig, we ask for Your healing in our lives—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Restore us, Lord, as You have promised. In Jesus' name, Amen.
