Knowing Your Worth – Song of Songs Series, Part 17
Scripture: Read Song of Songs 8:8-9
Heart Matter: A Wall or a Door
In Song of Songs 8:8-9, we see a conversation about a young sister whose family is discussing how to care for her as she enters future relationships. They use two metaphors: a wall and a door, which can also represent our sense of self-worth and character.
Being "a wall" symbolizes strength and being secure in one’s value. A wall stands firm, resisting external pressures and maintaining its spiritual integrity. For believers, this means standing strong in our identity in Christ, refusing to be devalued or compromised by the world’s standards. When we live with this kind of spiritual integrity, there’s a reward—symbolized in the verse by the battlement of silver, which represents honor and nobility. Maintaining purity and self-worth is precious in God’s eyes.
On the other hand, being "a door" indicates openness and perhaps being more susceptible to outside influences. A door opens and closes, lacking the firmness of a wall. Yet, there’s grace here too. The family in the passage talks about protecting the door with boards of cedar, illustrating that even if we are more vulnerable, God offers protection and leads us to build healthy boundaries through discernment and wisdom.
No matter if we feel like a wall or a door, God’s care and protection are always available to guide us in maintaining our worth and identity in Him.
Heart Application:
Reflect on your personal boundaries: Are you more like a wall, firmly grounded in your identity, or a door that opens easily to influences? Ask God for discernment in how to protect your heart and mind, and to help you set clear boundaries—whether it’s in your time, energy, relationships.
Prayer:
Abba father, help me to stand firm like a wall, secure in my identity, and to find wisdom and protection if I feel more like a door. Guard my heart and guide me in setting healthy boundaries. Give me discernment, and help me not to fear the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
