Knowing Your Worth – Song of Songs Series, Part 16
"I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me."Song of Songs 7:10
Heart Matter: The Restored Desire
In this verse, we encounter the Hebrew word תְּשׁוּקָה (teshuqah), meaning "desire." Interestingly, this word only appears three times in the entire Bible: in Genesis 3:16, Genesis 4:7, and Song of Songs 7:10. The first two instances speak of a broken, distorted desire that emerges as a result of the Fall.
In Genesis 3:16, God tells Eve that her desire will be for her husband, but this is not a healthy desire—it represents a struggle for control, marked by frustration and conflict. Similarly, in Genesis 4:7, God warns Cain that sin desires to master him, portraying the aggressive, dominating nature of sin. Both instances involve a distorted desire that leads to brokenness.
However, in Song of Songs 7:10, we encounter a restored desire. This is a healthy, redeemed desire, reflecting God's original plan for relationships—one marked by love, respect, and mutual care, not control or dominance. This verse points to a desire rooted in the sacrificial love of Christ. Just as Christ desires His people, His desire is not one of control, but of intimacy and sacrificial love. Through Christ’s agape love, our desires are transformed from being self-centered to being aligned with God’s centered.
In both marriage and our spiritual walk, healthy desire always honors and uplifts. It is an expression of grace and intimacy, rooted in God's love. When we align our desires with God’s, our motives will be pure and centered on God’s goodness and love.
Heart Application:
Feflect on where distorted desires might be present in your life. Do you find yourself seeking control over situations or people? Or perhaps you struggle with desires that lead you away from God’s will, allowing sin to master you? Pray over that area, asking God to redeem that desire and align it with His will.
Prayer:
Abba Father,. I pray that You would break any distorted desires within me—those that seek control or allow sin to master me. I declare that, through Christ, I have been given healthy and restored desires, rooted in love, respect, and intimacy with You. Help me to desire what You desire, aligning my heart with Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen.
