Love is… (Part 10)

Love bears all things. 1 Corinthians 13:7

"Love bears all things," Paul uses the Greek term στέγει (stegei), which signifies more than endurance—it refers to a "roof" or "covering." This imagery vividly illustrates how love functions: it protects us from external harm, actively working to shield others from exposure that could lead to shame, condemnation, or harm.

One common way we can expose people to harm is through our words—specifically through slander and gossip. When we choose not to guard someone's dignity and reputation, we forsake love's protective and covering nature. Conversely, choosing to cover someone's flaws is an act of love and protection, mirroring God's protective love for us. He covers our sins and does not expose them to shame us. In our interpersonal relationships, this means exercising discretion, refraining from sharing others' faults unnecessarily, and fostering a supportive environment where individuals can grow without fear of rejection or condemnation.

This approach doesn't mean that we cover up sin or tolerate mistakes; rather, it ensures that love always protects and creates an atmosphere of safety and acceptance where vulnerabilities can be safely managed. It embodies a supportive and nurturing heart, intent on restoration and healing, never on condemnation, even when correction is necessary.

Reflection:

In what ways can you more actively provide a "roof" of love over others, creating a safe space for growth and healing, while still addressing necessary truth in a spirit of gentleness and grace?

Prayer:

Abba Father, thank You for Your covering of love that protects us from shame and condemnation. Help us to love others by covering them with grace and protection. Forgive us for the times we have exposed rather than protected, slandered rather than supported. Grant us the wisdom to know when to speak and when to remain silent, always aiming to foster environments of healing, growth, and restoration. May we be secure in Your love, creating safe spaces where vulnerability leads to healing rather than harm. In Jesus' name, Amen.
