Love is…(Part 3)
Envy arises when we feel distressed because someone else possesses something we desire. This distress is often rooted in a sense of inadequacy or inferiority, leading individuals to feel intimidated and threatened by the success of others. Such feelings can foster bitterness and, in extreme cases, result in destructive behavior.
In stark contrast, the essence of agape love—the divine love described in the Bible—is about contentment and even a sense of compersion, which is the joy found in the joy of others. For instance, John the Baptist exemplified this when he was not threatened by Jesus attracting more followers. Instead, he declared, 'He must increase, but I must decrease' (John 3:30). Embracing others' success and finding contentment in their joy is at the heart of love that does not envy."
Reflection Question:
How can you cultivate a spirit of contentment and joy in the successes of others in your life?
Prayer:
Abba Father, we come before You acknowledging envy can infiltrate our hearts. Lord, we renounce the spirit of envy and ask for your grace to fill us with a sense of security and contentment in Your love. Just as John the Baptist rejoiced in the success of Jesus, help us to genuinely celebrate the accomplishments and happiness of others without feeling diminished. Teach us to see others through Your eyes, finding joy in their joy, and being content at all times. In Jesus' name, Amen.
