Money is Spiritual Part 16: Investment in the Bible

"Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may happen on earth." — Ecclesiastes 11:2 (ESV)

Can Christians invest? Even though the Bible doesn’t explicitly use the term "investment," the answer is yes! As Christians, we are called to exercise wise financial management. Our key verse today, Ecclesiastes 11:2, provides a valuable guideline: diversify your efforts because the future is uncertain. The preceding verse (Ecclesiastes 11:1) also encourages us to take risks, trusting that careful actions will yield returns over time.

The Hebrew word cheleq ("portion") in Ecclesiastes 11:2 teaches us to intentionally and thoughtfully distribute our resources. Whether through investments, giving, or saving, the principle is the same: preparation and stewardship. We are called to plan for the long term and manage what God has entrusted to us in a way that honors Him.

However, as God's people, we must invest ethically. This means avoiding industries or companies that promote harm or contradict Christian values—such as gambling, exploitation, or harmful products. Proverbs 22:7 reminds us, "The borrower is the slave of the lender," so it’s prudent to avoid risky ventures that require excessive debt. Only invest what you can afford to lose, and steer clear of schemes promising quick riches. Instead, follow the biblical principle of sowing and reaping: be patient and trust God to provide in His time.

Golden Nugget:

  1. Diversify Your Efforts: Spread your resources wisely to prepare for uncertainty.

  2. Invest Ethically: Avoid ventures that contradict Christian values or cause harm.

  3. Be Patient and Prudent: Avoid risky schemes and trust God’s timing for growth.

Prayer

Abba Father, help me to invest with discernment as I prepare for the future. Teach me patience and guide me to make investment decisions that glorify You. Let me be a channel of blessings to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
