Money is Spiritual – Part 17 Cain vs. Abel
Bible Verse: “And Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering.” – Genesis 4:4 (ESV)
The name Abel means "breath" or "vapor," symbolizing something fleeting and temporary. Yet, it also represents the spirit—humility and trust in God. In contrast, Cain means "acquired" or "possessed," stemming from Eve’s declaration in Genesis 4:1: "I have acquired a man from the Lord." This name conveys a sense of ownership, self-sufficiency, and pride in human effort, representing the fleshly nature.
When it came to giving, Abel brought the firstborn of his flock, symbolizing the best and first of what he had. This offering was an act of faith and devotion. Cain, however, brought "some of the fruits of the soil," which may have been leftovers or an unworthy portion. His giving lacked faith and reflected a heart of duty rather than genuine worship.
God accepted Abel’s offering because it came from a pure heart that honored Him. However, He rejected Cain’s offering because of Cain’s heart condition. This story teaches us the difference between giving in spirit and giving in the flesh. Cain represents transactional giving, seeing resources as possessions to serve himself. Abel, on the other hand, gave in faith, recognizing giving as a response to God’s goodness.
Money is spiritual because it reflects our heart, priorities, and relationship with God. As Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Ultimately, giving reveals where our heart truly rests.
