Being the pillar in God’s house

I set up its pillars firmly. Psalm 75:3

When I read the book of Exodus, I was amazed by the pillars of cloud and fire that symbolized God's presence, protection, and guidance. God could have displayed cloud and fire in any other way, but he chose to display them as a form of pillars.

The word pillar in Hebrew means upright and standing.  Therefore, a pillar is intended to support something and be erected upright. There can be no crooked pillars, as crooked pillars offer little support, and can lead to the collapse of the building.

We are all called to become God's pillars.  Paul refers to James, Cephas, and John as “pillars” by their fellow brethren. (Gal 2:9)  Anyone who wants to become God's pillar needs solid materials and a solid foundation, like a solid pedestal (the bottom part) for their pillar to stand upon. As a pillar needs to be able to withstand pressure, it is imperative to cultivate an upright and reliable character and unwavering faith.

Pillars are also intended to support something, and God provides detailed instructions on how to build and erect pillars in the temples throughout the bible. As such, we are expected to support the church as it is called the house of God.  A pillar can't fulfill its purpose if it stands alone. We are meant to support and serve the body of Christ, therefore, it is important to become involved in church and to constantly fellowship with one another to provide support and use God's gifts.

Finally, a pillar reaches to the top and supports the roof, which means God's pillar will remain close to God and be built to bear God's name and honor in this world. Let us become His pillar as a powerful witness to the world.

Blessing prayer: Thank you Jesus for being the cornerstone and for choosing us to be God's pillars. I pray that God gives us an upright heart and steadfast faith in order to withstand pressure and to support your spiritual house. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
