Door and Doorway (Part 1)

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3

The word “Door” has been used widely in the Bible.  There are two different words for “door” in Hebrew, while these two words are translated into the same word as “Door” in the English Bible.

The first word: Dalet is the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which means "door." Like all typical doors, it has hinges that allow it to open and close. The second word of Door is pethach in Hebrew, meaning doorway or a passageway.

Like the word “Dalet”, our mouth serves as a kind of door that we can open and close. Salvation requires us to confess with our mouth that “Jesus is Lord” and believe in our heart. Romans 10:9 Our mouth is a door that allows Jesus to enter our lives as He stands at our door and locks. Revelation 3:20

Our mouth, however, can shut out Jesus and people, and it can even open the door to death, as our tongue has the power of both life and death. Proverbs 18:2

In today's key verse, David pleads to "watch over my lips", and who is our watchman? Our watchman is the Holy Spirit, because He can help us to open the door to Jesus and protect us from the enemy.  “Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors”. Proverbs 8:34

Therefore, we need to invite the Holy Spirit to become our watchman over our lips. If we don't have the Holy Spirit, our hearts may be prone to evil and we may shut the door to our Shepherd Jesus.

Blessing prayer: Thank you, God, for sending us the Holy Spirit as our watchman. Keep our door open only to Jesus and keep us away from evil. Lead us to the everlasting door so that the King of Glory can come in!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
