Sowing to the Spirit
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:7-9
There is a profound spiritual principle of sowing and reaping, and this law applies both to our present reality and to eternity. Whether we sow to our flesh or to our spirit, all our actions have long-term and eternal consequences.
In today's key verse, Paul strongly emphasizes the importance of not being deceived, and then goes on to explain the spiritual principle. Like farming, it is like the natural law of sowing and reaping. It is evident that we can sow in two fields: our flesh or our spirit. However, these two fields are in conflict with one another, “ For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. Galatians 5:17
Sowing in the flesh reaps "corruption", which in Greek also means destruction and perishing. In my experience, I have seen Christians who live and think carnally and do not open up to the spirit, and ultimately abandon their faith. This "sow" and "reap" in the flesh has led to destruction.
Paul also encourages us not to get weary while doing good while sowing in the spirit, because it involves denying our flesh, and he explains another reality, “for in due season we shall reap”, there comes a harvest time from God and the key is “do not lose heart.” It’s like farming, when we sow the seeds, we’re unsure of how they’ll grow. Eventually, the seedlings will grow into trees and bear fruit. Seeing the spiritual fruits takes perseverance and God's time.
Not only will we reap in our earthly lives, but on that DAY when we see the Lord that He will reward us bountifully and gloriously, many of us will regret that we didn't sow more in the spirit in our lifetime. Why was it such a waste that we sowed too much to our flesh for a fleeting pleasure compared to eternal glory?
It's never too late to sow in the spirit, but first stop sowing to flesh, don't dwell on fleshy, impure and self-centered thoughts, but allow the spirit to take over our minds and thus actions so that we can live by the spirit, immerse ourselves in God's words, obey His voice, and do good to others. Let us sow bountifully to the Spirit and yield our lives fully to Him.
Blessing prayer: Help us be filled with the Spirit so we can receive more of your presence and power of the Spirit and crucify our flesh daily so we can reap a hundredfold in the spirit field. In Jesus’ name, Amen
