Be Still and Selah!

Be still, and know that I am God; Psalm 46:10

Psalm 46 begins with earth-shattering metaphors—mountains quaking and seas roaring. The psalmist paints a picture of chaos turned to calm by the presence of God. This psalm is punctuated by the term "Selah" three times, a Hebrew word that suggests a pause for reflection. This pause is an invitation to stop the noise, quiet our hearts, and meditate on God's Word. In these still moments, we can truly "know" God, not just as a concept, but in our spirits, recognizing that our Lord reigns and is in control.

Pausing is essential because it allows us to step back from our struggles and acknowledge that God is truly in control. It shifts our focus from our problems to the Ultimate Problem Solver. In stillness, we are reminded that the same God who calms the chaos is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1), our deliverer, and our very present help in trouble.

So, even as the earth gives way and the mountains fall, let us remember: God is immovable. And in the art of Selah—of pausing—we find His strength and hope to endure and look up for His help.

Reflection Question:

How can you create moments of Selah in your daily life, intentionally pausing to be still and acknowledge God's presence and control?

Prayer and Declaration:

Heavenly Father, Your love quiets my heart in the midst of turmoil. I declare, as in Psalm 46:1, that You are my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Lord, as I face the challenges of life, help me to pause—to Selah—and remember that You are God. You are my fortress, and in You, I find the strength to stand firm. Teach me to be still in Your presence, to recognize Your power and sovereignty over all. As I rest in Your love, may my spirit be revived, my faith be strengthened, and my life be a testament to Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
