Food for Holistic Wellness Series (Part 5):

Part 5: Fat is Good
They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. Psalm 36:8

Natural fats, created by God, are good for us—unlike modern, highly processed seed oils. In Scripture, fatness represents God's abundant blessings.

Physical Aspect: Choose Natural Fats Over Seed Oils

In many households, especially in China, oils like canola, soybean, and corn are commonly used. While labeled as "vegetable oils," these are highly processed with chemical solvents and heat. These oils are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which are pro-inflammatory when consumed in excess. The ideal omega-6 to omega-3 ratio should be 1:1 or 3:1, but in modern diets, it’s often 20:1, leading to inflammation linked to diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and more.

Instead, opt for natural fats such as grass-fed butter or ghee, which are high in omega-3s. Cold-pressed olive oil and avocado oil are excellent choices. Fish oil is also beneficial for balancing omega-3, supporting brain health (since the brain is 60% fat), and promoting healthy skin.

Emotional Aspect: Fat and Emotional Well-Being

Healthy fats, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, play a significant role in emotional health. They help reduce depression and anxiety, which is why foods like salmon are often called "happy food." Omega-3 is anti-inflammatory, contributing to emotional well-being, whereas excessive omega-6 can promote inflammation and worsen mental health.

Spiritual Aspect: Fatness as a Symbol of God's Blessings

In the Bible, fatness symbolizes abundance, fullness, and God’s favor. Psalm 65:11 says, "Your paths drip with fatness," representing God’s rich blessings. Fat things and full marrow in Scripture are images of abundant provision. Olive oil represents anointing and spiritual prosperity. God’s provision—whether physical or spiritual—is always good, but like all things, it should be consumed wisely and in moderation. Avoid highly processed seed oils that distort God’s natural gifts.

Tip: Most restaurants use seed oils because of their low cost. When dining out, try to choose dishes that minimize oil use, such as hot pots or sushi. My favorite product for home cooking is organic, grass-fed ghee from Fourth & Heart.

Prayer: Abba Father, thank You for the abundance You provide. Just as You declared fat to be good and a symbol of Your blessing, help us to make wise choices in what we consume, honoring Your creation and nourishing our bodies, minds, and spirits. May we always remember that all good things come from You. The righteous shall be fat and flourishing, In Jesus name, Amen.
