Love is…(Part 1)

Love is Patient. (1 Cor. 13:4)

In the famous 'love chapter' of 1 Corinthians 13, Paul begins by describing love as patient. The Greek word used here, μακροθυμεῖ (makrothumei), is derived from μακρός (makros), meaning 'long,' and θυμός (thymos), meaning 'temper.' It literally translates to 'long-tempered,' describing someone who is slow to anger and enduringly patient.

Patience, as the first attribute of love, indicates that genuine love can withstand delays and tolerate annoyances without becoming upset. It allows us to face trials without yielding to frustration or anger, demonstrating steadfast endurance.

In a sense, love shows a remarkable capacity for us to hold back from reacting to offenses or irritating behaviors. It gives us emotional resilience and the depth to maintain calmness in relationships, even when conflicts arise. On a personal level, being 'long-tempered' helps us not to succumb to emotional outbursts or make quick and critical judgments, but rather to remain at peace and maintain a spirit of grace and gentleness.

Reflection:

"How can practicing the patience described in 1 Corinthians 13:4 change your current relationships or your views towards people you hold offenses against?

Prayer

Abba Father, I want to reflect Your love that is long-tempered. I bless my spirit with patience to endure and not be quickly provoked. May the Holy Spirit guide me to be slow to anger and rich in compassion for others. Help me in my weaknesses, and I trust that You will help me to grow. I pray for the resilience to face each day's trials with a calm and loving heart, bearing with others in love and manifesting the patience of Christ in all my relationships. In Jesus' name, Amen."
