Seasons of Life: Part 2

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

Life is a journey with different seasons. In the coming days, I will share Pastor Les Bowling’s observations on the different life stages, each described with an 'S' word for each decade. Please note that these are observations, not doctrines, but I personally find that they hold some truth about each stage of life.

Ages 0-10: Security

The first decade of life is about security. Children are searching for safety and love, and their confidence is built on how much they are loved and affirmed. Unconditional love is the key.

A child who hears "I love you, I’m proud of you" grows with a strong sense of identity.

Three types of confidence emerge:

  • Situational Confidence – Confidence that comes from experience or familiarity with a specific situation (e.g., feeling confident in school but insecure in social settings).

  • Life Confidence – A general sense of self-worth and security, shaped by love and acceptance. This confidence is shaken when a person feels unloved, rejected, or unworthy.

  • God Confidence – A deep, unwavering trust rooted in faith rather than circumstances. It comes from knowing our identity is in Christ.

A child who develops God confidence will stand firm even when life’s circumstances change.

Ages 10-20: Self-discovery

  • The second decade is about self-discovery. Teens naturally focus on who they are, and it’s a phase of asking big questions: Who am I? Where do I belong?

  • While this stage can seem self-focused, it is a necessary process for developing a strong identity.

  • The danger lies in seeking identity apart from God, which can lead to insecurity and confusion.

Teens who anchor their identity in God rather than the world will develop a strong sense of identity that sustains them throughout adulthood.

Reflection Questions:

  • How have the words spoken over you as a child shaped your confidence today? What influences have shaped your sense of identity?

Prayer:

Abba Father, thank You for guiding us through each season of life. Help us to build our confidence in You and to find our true identity in Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
